& COLOR GUARD
Class info
Beginning Orchestra & Band

Become a Part of the GHS Band or Orchestra Tradition!
This class is designed for students with little or no musical experience who are eager to learn how to play an orchestra or band instrument. School instruments are available to borrow at no charge, so you can get started right away and look forward to performing in concerts, on the field, or at music festivals. As you progress and become proficient, our beginners have the opportunity to move up to one of our other fantastic bands, orchestras, or drum lines for even more exciting high school experiences!
Concert Band

This is an Intermediate-Level Band perfect for students transitioning from middle school who are eager to learn more and have fun! Concert Band students may have the opportunity to join the Royal Blue Regiment Marching Band, jazz band, symphonic band, and orchestra in exciting events like parades, concerts, music festivals, and more. Take the next step in your musical adventure and expand your horizons!
Symphonic Band

This is the ultimate performance group for our advanced musicians. The Symphonic Band/Wind Ensemble includes participation in the Royal Blue Regiment, the GHS Symphony Orchestra, contests, parades, concerts in theme parks and more. Members in this ensemble need to plan on activities, rehearsals and travel outside of school hours. Many of our students graduate with honors and earn music scholarships to university or entrance to military academies.
Orchestra

This is an intermediate-level ensemble perfect for string players transitioning from middle school and eager to expand their musical skills while having fun. Orchestra students often collaborate with other musicians in the Royal Blue Regiment, Color Guard, or join one of our renowned string ensembles, like the famous Footnotes, for even more exciting opportunities. Orchestra members can look forward to concerts, special performances, and unique musical experiences. As you grow, you may also be invited to join the Symphony Orchestra for more advanced performances!
Symphony Orchestra/Philharmonic

One of Grossmont’s best musical experiences, the Grossmont Symphony is for our most advanced string players. Members can look forward to performing some of the world’s most beautiful music, often accompanied by winds, percussion, and even choir! This ensemble offers the opportunity to participate in incredible concerts and special events. Members should be prepared for rehearsals and travel outside of school hours. Many of our students graduate with honors and earn prestigious music scholarships to universities.

Jazz Band

An especially fun group for intermediate to advanced students (though all are welcome to try out), the Jazz Band focuses on big band, pop tunes, show tunes, pep band, and 20th-century jazz improvisation. Students in this ensemble work closely with a rhythm section that includes drums, vibes, bass, and piano. Jazz Band members also have the opportunity to participate in the Royal Blue Regiment and other bands. Be prepared for extracurricular activities, performances, and rehearsals outside of school hours!

Color Guard

Sometimes called the "Sport of the Arts," the Color Guard is a dynamic team that performs alongside the Royal Blue Regiment Marching Band during the fall for field competitions, parades, and football games. As winter break approaches, the team shifts focus to Winter Guard, competing with organizations like the Winter Guard Association of Southern California (WGASC). Team members learn to toss, twirl, spin, and catch colorful flags, rifles, and sabers, all while dancing in sync with the music. Open to all students—especially those with dance experience—Color Guard is a great way to build confidence and self-reliance. Be prepared for activities, practices, and travel outside of school hours.
